Trek the legendary high-altitude trail linking Madeira's two highest peaks above the clouds. One of Europe's most dramatic mountain walks — raw volcanic terrain, sweeping Atlantic panoramas, and total wilderness at 1,800 m.
What to expect
A private 4WD picks you up at the port and climbs into the clouds to Pico do Arieiro (1,818 m). Your guide leads you along the sculpted lava ridge, through tunnels carved into the rock face, to the island's highest point at Pico Ruivo. The views — layers of cloud below, endless Atlantic above — are unlike anywhere else in Europe. A warm local lunch is arranged in a mountain village before your return descent.
Good to know
The walk is 9 km one-way and takes 4–5 hours; weather can change rapidly, so a certified guide is essential. Book at least 2 weeks ahead as small-group slots fill fast. All-aboard is typically 18:00; a half-day version returns comfortably by 16:00.
