Dance on the famous bridge, then ascend to the rose-garden belvedere above the Rhône for a panorama that has inspired painters for centuries. The most atmospheric close to any Avignon day — best savoured in late-afternoon light.
What to expect
The Pont Saint-Bénézet — the bridge of the famous French nursery rhyme — stretches four surviving arches into the Rhône from the city walls, offering unimpeded views of the Palais des Papes rising behind you. An audio guide (multilingual, included) narrates the bridge's medieval construction and catastrophic flooding history with surprising drama. Afterwards, the Rocher des Doms garden terrace above the city offers arguably the finest viewpoint in southern France: the Rhône, the Alpilles, Mont Ventoux, and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon's Tour Philippe-le-Bel all in one sweep. End with an aperitif at the garden café as the Mistral drops and the valley turns gold.
Good to know
The bridge and gardens are walkable from any city drop-off point. The Avignon City Pass (EUR 68) covers this site plus the Palais des Papes, Musée du Petit Palais, and more — excellent value if you plan a full day in the city. Late afternoon (after 4 pm) offers the best light and thinner crowds.
