Private Bird of Paradise Dawn Safari in Varirata National Park

Rise before first light for a private guided dawn walk into Varirata National Park — PNG's premier birding sanctuary — in search of the Raggiana Bird of Paradise performing its extraordinary courtship display. Pure bucket-list wildlife theatre.

What to expect

A pre-dawn transfer from Port Moresby delivers you to Varirata's cool highland trails as the forest awakens. Your specialist guide leads you to established display trees where male Raggiana Birds of Paradise fan their flame-orange plumes in competitive courtship ritual. Beyond the star attraction, the park teems with hornbills, parrots, and kingfishers. You finish with a scenic overlook breakfast as the Coral Sea glimmers below.

Good to know

Varirata National Park is approximately 45 minutes from Port Moresby port. The display is strictly dawn-dependent — a 05:00 departure is essential. Park entry fee is PGK 20 (approx. USD 5); confirm it is included with your operator. Allow 5–6 hours total; well within a standard port day.
