What to expect
The trail descends into The Dales' lush ravines through a forest alive with the calls of endemic birds and the rustle of red crabs. Your guide identifies the towering trees, strangler figs, and orchids lining the path, weaving in the island's geological history — a seamount thrust above the ocean surface, its ancient coral foundations now carpeted in jungle. Freshwater streams tumble over basalt boulders into clear rock pools, and the humidity and birdsong create an atmosphere of true tropical wilderness. Emerging at the coast, the contrast of dense green forest meeting brilliant turquoise Indian Ocean is a photographer's dream.
Good to know
Moderate fitness required; uneven and sometimes slippery terrain — proper hiking footwear is essential. Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person and apply insect repellent before entering the forest. Pre-book in advance; tours depart in the morning to maximise wildlife activity and allow ample time for the return to the tender before all-aboard. Light rain gear recommended year-round.
