Réunion's luminous west-coast lagoon is one of the Indian Ocean's finest, its coral gardens protected by a UNESCO-listed fringing reef. Pair a private snorkel in the marine reserve with a tour of a historic Creole rum distillery for a perfect half-day.
What to expect
Your driver delivers you to the Saint-Gilles marina, where a certified local dive guide briefs you on the reserve's marine life before leading a 90-minute snorkel along the coral bommies just inside the reef. The water is warm, clear, and sheltered. After rinsing off, you're driven to the Isautier estate in Saint-Pierre, the oldest family rum producer on the island, where five generations of craft are explained over a tutored tasting of agricultural and traditional rums, each paired with local vanilla and coconut preparations. The drive back along the coastal road at golden hour is spectacular.
Good to know
Saint-Gilles is ~45 minutes south of the port. Confirm snorkel guide availability directly or via your private driver-guide. The lagoon is fully protected — no collecting or standing on coral. Isautier distillery tours run mornings and afternoons; pre-book by email (contact@isautier.com). Combine both elements into a 5–6 hour half-day excursion, leaving comfortable margin before all-aboard.
