Just 45 minutes from the port, Shai Hills is Ghana's closest wildlife reserve — baboons, kob antelopes and rare Chandler's reedbuck roam sacred Dangme cave systems and open savannah. A genuine wild Africa experience with almost no other visitors.
What to expect
A private 4WD with a Ghana Wildlife Society ranger takes you into the reserve's mix of rocky outcrops, dry savannah and forest patches. Olive baboon families are near-guaranteed sightings; look also for green vervet monkeys, oribi and the reserve's striking bird life including hornbills and rollers. The Dangme sacred caves — once used as shelter and spiritual sites — add a cultural dimension unique to this reserve. The open savannah sections offer sweeping vistas rarely photographed.
