Journey from Bergen into the heart of the Hardangerfjord region aboard the legendary Flåmsbana — consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful rail journeys — descending through cascading waterfalls, wild gorges, and snow-capped peaks to the tiny village of Flåm. Utterly unforgettable.
What to expect
The train winds through 20 tunnels and past the thundering Kjosfossen waterfall — where the train pauses for a photography stop and, in summer, a theatrical nøkken folk performance. Descending into the Flåm valley, the scenery shifts from alpine tundra to lush green riverbanks. In Flåm, the tiny Æ waterfront, the Flåm Railway Museum, and the fjordside Ægir Bryggeri (a spectacular Viking-longhouse brewery) reward leisurely exploration.
Good to know
Pre-book Flåmsbana tickets well in advance at visitflam.com — the train sells out weeks ahead in summer. A full day is required: Bergen–Myrdal by Bergensbanen (approx. 2 hrs), Myrdal–Flåm by Flåmsbana (1 hr), return same route. Confirm your ship's all-aboard time and allow 30–45 minutes' buffer back to the Bergen terminal.
