Kayak the mirror-still waters of Gatun Lake inside the Canal Zone, paddling among submerged Spanish-colonial tree tops while watching Panamax vessels slide silently past. A truly singular juxtaposition of wilderness and megaengineering.
What to expect
A 20-minute transfer from the Colón pier delivers you to Gatun Lake, where guides fit you with kit and brief you on the route. You'll paddle through flooded rainforest channels, spotting howler monkeys, toucans and caimans, before emerging into open water to watch a container ship pass within metres. The Gatun Lock visitor platform forms a dramatic backdrop as you return. Cold drinks and tropical fruit await at the put-out point.
Good to know
Groups capped at 8 paddlers — book well in advance. No kayaking experience required; guides are trained rescue paddlers. Finishes with ample time for all-aboard. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a dry bag for valuables.
