A free shuttle often runs to Kings Square or the city centre; confirm with your ship the night before as it depends on passenger numbers.
Gangway is usually open shortly after the early-morning arrival typical here. All-aboard is generally 30–60 minutes before the late-afternoon or early-evening departure—check your ship’s daily programme for the exact time. Taxis queue outside the terminal; the train station is about 10–15 minutes on foot via Peter Hughes Drive and the pedestrian crossing.
The trap first-timers fall into is assuming everything is a short stroll from the gangway. Rottnest ferry departures have fixed schedules, Swan Valley tours leave from Perth, and the return ferry from Rottnest can be fully booked on busy days. Miss the last comfortable connection and you risk an expensive taxi back from the island or a very tight run to the ship. Experienced cruisers build in buffer time or choose the operator that guarantees return.

The Rottnest Skydive + Fremantle Ferry Package at USD 432 per person is a different proposition; a couple would pay USD 864 before any add-ons. At these levels the ship’s tour can become the tighter call, especially on Holland America, Oceania, Princess or Viking Ocean sailings where a long transfer or tight connection adds risk. The ship’s version guarantees you are back aboard even if the ferry is delayed or the winery coach runs late. For the bike-and-ferry Rottnest trips the direct price is usually the sensible choice. The lunch cruise is almost always cheaper independently.

You will be back at the B-Shed ferry landing by early afternoon with time to walk or shuttle back to the ship. If I could pick only one, I would take the From Fremantle: Rottnest Island Ferry and Bike Day Tour (the scenic or water version, depending on mood) and call it a day. At USD 91 it delivers the classic Fremantle highlight without the long transfer or tight timing worries of the winery coach. The ship’s equivalent is rarely worth double when the ferry operator already knows the last boat that gets you home safely. The rest of the day is better spent wandering Fremantle or taking the cheaper Swan River lunch cruise if energy remains.
