Your cruise
Silver Endeavour · 7-night Northern Europe round trip from Longyearbyen
Jul 8 – Jul 15 · 7 nights ·
Day 1 Longyearbyen (board) · Day 2–5 Svalbard Northern Region · Day 6–7 Svalbard Southern Region · Day 8 Longyearbyen (step off)
What you do Glide across an ice-flecked fjord to Pyramiden, a perfectly preserved Soviet ghost town, then press on to the face of Nordenskiöld Glacier. One of the Arctic's most haunting and cinematic experiences.
What to expect Board a purpose-built Arctic zodiac or small expedition vessel in Longyearbyen harbour and cruise the dramatic Isfjorden. Step ashore at Pyramiden's eerie Soviet-era streets — statues of Lenin, a rusting cultural hall, untouched gymnasia — all frozen in 1998. Your naturalist guide brings the Cold War ghost town to vivid life before the boat edges to the calving glacier terminus for an unforgettable close encounter with blue ice.
Good to know Tours run approximately 7–9 hours; confirm the all-aboard time with your ship and book this first as it sells out fast. Dress in full Arctic layers — the fjord is exposed and temperatures drop sharply on the water. Pre-book directly on the Hurtigruten Svalbard website weeks in advance.
Versus the ship tour Small-expedition vessels with expert Arctic naturalist guides; close-approach access to the glacier face and Soviet-era architecture that no large vessel can reach. The pace is unhurried, with ample time ashore in Pyramiden.

What you do A small-group zodiac expedition deep into the wilderness fjords ringing Longyearbyen in search of polar bears, Arctic foxes, walrus colonies, beluga whales and Svalbard reindeer in their true habitat.
What to expect Depart Longyearbyen in a fast, open zodiac and push into the outer reaches of Adventfjorden and beyond, scanning ice edges and snowfields for Svalbard's legendary wildlife. Polar bear encounters are never guaranteed — that is the point: this is raw, unscripted wilderness. Walrus haul-outs, seabird cliffs thick with little auks, and the silence of an Arctic fjord between sightings are themselves magnificent. A warm packed lunch is served on the ice — a memory in itself.
Good to know Full-day tours are 6–8 hours; confirm ship departure time before booking. Waterproof outer layers and thermal underlayers are essential — the operator provides a comprehensive kit list on booking. Pre-book at least 6–8 weeks ahead in summer.
Versus the ship tour Strict maximum of 12 guests per zodiac with a licensed Arctic guide; nimble enough to follow wildlife sightings that a larger boat simply cannot. The guide carries mandatory polar bear protection and provides expert wildlife interpretation throughout.
What you do Descend into a real, raw Arctic coal mine that last operated in the 1990s, guided by a miner-turned-storyteller through tunnels of exposed permafrost and frozen history. One of Svalbard's most distinctive underground experiences.
What to expect Don a hard hat, headlamp and warm overalls before following your guide into Mine 3 on the hillside above Longyearbyen. Inside, the temperature hovers just below freezing year-round, and the permafrost walls glisten under lantern light. Your guide — part historian, part former miner — tells the story of the Norwegian coal industry that literally built this Arctic town, from polar night working conditions to the geopolitics of the Svalbard Treaty. Emerge into the sharp Arctic air with a completely different understanding of Longyearbyen.
Good to know Tours last approximately 1.5–2 hours, making it ideal to pair with a second excursion in the same port day. Sturdy footwear is recommended; overalls are provided. The mine entrance is a short minibus ride from town — transfers are typically included. Book directly via Hurtigruten Svalbard.
Versus the ship tour A rare licensed entry into a genuine working-heritage mine, with guides who have direct personal knowledge of Arctic coal mining. The small group, lantern-lit format creates an intimacy and atmosphere impossible to replicate above ground.

What you do Sail across Isfjorden to Barentsburg, one of the world's most remote Russian settlements, where Soviet murals, a working coal mine, and a fiercely proud community of 400 Russian and Ukrainian residents defy the Arctic — and expectations.
What to expect The 50-kilometre sea crossing through Isfjorden is itself a spectacle, with Svalbard's dramatic tundra coastline sliding past. In Barentsburg, a local Russian guide escorts you through the USSR-era settlement: Lenin still gazes from murals, the hotel bar serves vodka under a Soviet coat of arms, and children play in the shadow of an active coalmine. Visit the surprisingly rich local museum, peer into the greenhouse that battles to grow vegetables at 78°N, and absorb the surreal, geopolitically fascinating reality of Russian sovereignty in Norwegian waters.
Good to know Round trip is approximately 7–8 hours by fast catamaran. Norwegian and Russian visa regulations do not apply to Svalbard — no extra paperwork needed. Bring NOK or EUR for the bar and museum shop. Book early; summer departures sell out.
Versus the ship tour The guided ashore element is led by a local Barentsburg guide with genuine insider knowledge of this extraordinary living community — a perspective that transforms what could be a curiosity stop into a profound cultural encounter.

What you do Stand at the entrance of the most important building on Earth — the Svalbard Global Seed Vault — with a specialist guide who unlocks the science, the politics, and the profound meaning of this frozen Noah's Ark for global food security.
What to expect A minibus takes your small group up the Adventdalen hillside to the iconic wedge-shaped entrance emerging from the permafrost. While interior access to the vault itself is restricted to depositors, your specialist guide transforms the exterior visit into an immersive briefing — explaining which seed collections from conflict zones have already been withdrawn for recovery, and why this remote Arctic mountain was chosen as civilisation's insurance policy. The surrounding Arctic landscape, with reindeer often grazing within sight, amplifies the sense of a world apart.
Good to know Tours typically run 2–3 hours including town highlights; combine with a mine visit or museum for a full port day. The Seed Vault is a 15-minute drive from the pier. Book through Longyearbyen Guiding directly for the most authoritative commentary.
Versus the ship tour Longyearbyen Guiding's expert-led small-group format goes far beyond a photo stop — guides provide deep context on the vault's role in climate resilience, the seeds currently stored, and the geopolitics of Arctic sovereignty that make this site uniquely compelling.

What you do Norway's northernmost world-class museum brings together polar exploration history, Arctic ecology, and Svalbard's extraordinary human story in one architecturally striking building — an essential anchor for any discerning port day.
What to expect Set in a purpose-built facility in Longyearbyen's UNIS campus area, Svalbard Museum houses galleries spanning the age of polar exploration, from the doomed balloon expeditions of Andrée to Amundsen's triumphant dirigible crossing of the North Pole. Wildlife exhibits showcase the island's extraordinary Arctic ecosystem, while the mining and settlement galleries give human scale to the harshness of life at 78°N. Allow 90 minutes to do it justice; the gift shop is one of the finest in the Norwegian Arctic.
Good to know The museum is a 10-minute walk or 5-minute taxi from the cruise pier. Open daily; no advance booking required for individual entry, though group/curator tours should be pre-arranged via the museum website. Pair with the Gruve 3 mine tour for a rich full-day cultural programme.
Versus the ship tour Self-paced or optionally curator-guided, the museum offers an intellectual depth and archival quality — historic expedition artefacts, wildlife dioramas, and mining heritage — that reframes everything else you see in Svalbard on the same day.
