Expect a short, bouncy ride over soft red dunes rather than hardcore off-roading. Most tours last 30–60 minutes on automatic quads that are easy to handle even if you’ve never ridden before. You’ll get a quick safety briefing, helmet, and follow a guide in a convoy. The experience is fun and mildly thrilling — think floating over sand crests, gentle whoops, and plenty of photo stops — but it’s tourist-friendly, not extreme. After the ride many packages continue with dune bashing in a 4x4, sandboarding, camel photos, and a basic BBQ dinner at a desert camp. It’s a long half-day commitment (usually 4–6 hours total including transfers).
Best time is November to March when it’s cooler; summer rides are brutally hot even in the evening. Expect to pay around $40–90 per person depending on duration and whether you add the full camp package. Solo drivers pay a bit more than passengers.
Pick the shorter pure quad option if you mainly want to ride; skip the full evening package if you don’t enjoy group tourist camps with belly dancers and henna stalls. Bring a scarf or shemagh — sand gets everywhere — and wear closed shoes, not sandals.
