Most boat tours from Lima head to the Palomino Islands about 30-40 minutes offshore. Expect to see hundreds of sea lions sunning on the rocks, seabirds, and possibly dolphins or penguins if you're lucky. The ride itself is on medium-sized motor boats that bounce around quite a bit; it's not a luxury cruise. You'll usually get about 45 minutes near the islands before heading back. It's a straightforward half-day trip that gives you a decent taste of marine life without committing to a full day.
Best time is December to March when the water is calmer and marine life is more active. From April to November the Humboldt current brings colder water, more wind, and rougher seas – many people get seasick then. Expect to pay around $35-70 per person depending on whether you go with a basic shared boat or a smaller group with better service. Tours that combine the islands with Paracas or other stops jump to $150+ and often feel rushed.
Pick a morning departure to avoid afternoon wind and bring a windbreaker even if it's sunny – it gets cold on the water. Skip the full-day combos unless you really want to see Paracas; they're long and tiring for what you get. If you're prone to motion sickness, take medication beforehand or consider skipping this altogether. The sea lions are the main event and they're genuinely impressive up close.
