Sandboarding Near Lima: Worth It?

Sandboarding from Lima means a full-day trip to either the massive dunes at Chilca (about 1 hour south) or the famous Huacachina oasis (4–5 hours). Expect a mix of 4x4 dune buggy rides that feel like a rollercoaster and sliding down steep sand slopes on a board. The buggies are loud and fast; the boarding itself is more like sledding than snowboarding—fun but tiring if you climb back up. Huacachina adds a desert oasis vibe with swimmable lagoon, while Chilca is rawer dunes with fewer tourists. It's a solid half- or full-day adventure if you like adrenaline and desert scenery, but it's not a relaxing beach day.

Best time is May to October (dry season) when sand is firmer and temperatures are cooler. Summers (Dec–Mar) get brutally hot and the sand can be soft and slow. Expect to pay around $60–$90 for a half-day Chilca trip including transport, gear, and basic instruction. Full-day Huacachina runs $180–$320 depending on group size and luxury level. Private tours cost more but are worth it if you want flexibility.

Pick the smaller Chilca dunes if you want more runs and less travel time. Skip the big Huacachina trip unless you also want to see the oasis—it's a long ride for basically the same activity. Wear closed shoes, bring a buff or scarf for the sand, and don't expect to look graceful. The wipeouts are part of the fun.
