Should You Do a Gourmet Market Tour in Lima?

A Lima gourmet market and food tour is essentially a small-group evening stroll (usually 8-10 people) that mixes light sightseeing with serious eating. You'll hit a couple of markets for ceviche samples, anticuchos, and local produce, then move to a sit-down restaurant for a proper meal with drinks. Expect about four hours of walking, tasting, and listening to your guide explain Peruvian ingredients and history. It's genuinely informative if you like food, but it's more structured dinner-with-education than a casual market wander. The evening version is popular because the city lights and cooler air make it pleasant.

Best time is May to September during the dry “winter” season when Lima isn't as foggy or drizzly. Expect to pay around $150–220 per person for a proper small-group tour that includes tastings, dinner, one or two cocktails, and transport between spots. It's not cheap, but the quality is usually high.

Pick the tours that spend real time in the markets and let you try seasonal fruit or ají varieties; skip anything that feels rushed or adds too many tourist traps. Wear comfortable shoes—you'll do more walking than most descriptions admit—and don't overeat at the first couple of stops or you'll be full before the main dinner.
