Should You Take a Boat Trip in Dubrovnik?

A boat trip is one of the best ways to see Dubrovnik’s walls and the surrounding islands from the water. Expect 45-minute panoramic cruises that circle the Old Town or longer full-day trips (6–8 hours) that visit one or more of the Elafiti islands. The shorter tours give you dramatic views of the city walls and some swimming stops; the longer ones add swimming, lunch, and time on quieter islands with pine trees and pebble beaches. The sea is usually calm in the morning and can get choppier in the afternoon, especially in summer. Boats range from small wooden vessels with 10–12 passengers to larger ones carrying 30–50 people. Most have shade, basic toilets, and space to sit or lie on the deck.

The best time is late spring (May–June) or early autumn (September–October) when the weather is pleasant, the water is warm enough to swim, and crowds are lighter. July and August are hot, crowded, and more expensive. Expect to pay around €25–45 for a short panoramic tour and €60–110 for a full-day island cruise that usually includes lunch or drinks. Private tours for small groups start higher.

Pick a smaller boat if you want a quieter experience and easy swimming stops; skip the largest party-style boats that blast music and feel like floating nightclubs. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, water, and swimsuit even on short tours—many include at least one swim. Book morning departures when possible; the light is better and seas are calmer.
