Blue Cave Tour from Dubrovnik: Worth It?

The Blue Cave tour is a half-day boat trip (usually 4–5 hours) that takes you just outside Dubrovnik to the tiny island of Koločep and a handful of other spots. The main event is the Blue Cave itself: you enter a sea cave where the sunlight turns the water an intense electric blue. It’s genuinely striking for about ten minutes, but the experience is shared with other boats and involves a lot of waiting your turn to swim inside. After the cave you usually stop at a couple of green caves for snorkeling, then finish with a longer swim and beach time at Šunj on Lopud island, which has the nicest sand in the area. The boat ride itself is pleasant on a calm day; expect some swell if the wind is up.

Summer (June–September) is when the light inside the cave is strongest, but it’s also peak season with more crowds and higher prices. Expect to pay around €45–70 per person for a small-group shared boat; private tours start at €300–450 for up to six people. May and October are calmer and cheaper but the cave color can be less vivid. Skip the cheapest large-group tours that feel like cattle boats; a smaller shared tour with 8–12 people is the sweet spot. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes if you have them, and a towel that dries quickly. The boats supply snorkel gear.
