The Blue Cave trip is a half-day boat tour (usually 4–5 hours) that takes you west of Dubrovnik to the tiny island of Koločep and the Elaphiti chain. You motor into a sea cave where the light turns the water an electric blue, then stop at one or two smaller green caves for swimming and snorkeling. Most tours finish with a longer stop at Sunj Beach on Lopud, where you can swim, have a drink, or grab lunch. The boat is usually a medium-sized wooden or fiberglass vessel carrying 10–30 people. Expect some swell, loud engines, and shared space with other groups at the popular spots. It’s scenic but not remote or exclusive.
Best time is late May to mid-June or September to early October: fewer crowds, calmer seas, and good swimming weather without the July–August heat and traffic jam of boats. Expect to pay around €45–70 per person, depending on whether you choose a small-group tour, add hotel pickup, or go on a bigger shared boat. Drinks are often included.
Tip: pick a morning departure so you hit the Blue Cave before the light gets harsh and the queue of boats builds up. Skip the big-party boats if you want to actually hear the guide or enjoy the caves without crowds; a smaller group tour makes a real difference. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes for the rocky entries, and cash for the beach bar.
