Island Hopping from Dubrovnik: Worth It?

Island hopping from Dubrovnik means spending a day on a boat that stops at two or three of the Elaphiti islands (mostly Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan). Expect a mix of swimming stops, short village walks, and a few hours of free time per island. The boats are usually mid-size with seating inside and out; some include lunch, others just drinks. It’s relaxed rather than luxurious. You won’t feel rushed, but you also won’t get deep exploration—think pleasant coastal views, pine trees, and pebble beaches rather than dramatic wilderness. The ride itself gives you the classic postcard view of Dubrovnik’s walls from the sea.

Best time is late May to mid-June or September to early October. July and August are hot, crowded, and the boats fill up fast. Shoulder months give you better swimming conditions without the worst crowds. Expect to pay around $45–85 per person depending on whether it’s a basic hop-on boat or one with lunch and smaller group size. Private options start noticeably higher.

Pick a tour that stops at Lopud and Šipan and skips the shortest Koločep visit if you want more time on land. Skip the biggest party boats if you’re after peace—smaller departures tend to be calmer. Bring water shoes, sunscreen, and cash for the few cafés on the islands.
