A walking tour is the easiest way to understand Dubrovnik's Old Town without getting lost in the crowds or missing the stories behind the walls, palaces, and fortresses. Expect 90 minutes to two hours of fairly gentle walking on smooth stone streets with some steps. A good guide will cover the main sights – Stradun, the Rector's Palace, the cathedral, and the city walls – while explaining the city's history, sieges, and Game of Thrones filming spots without going overboard. It's not a workout; it's a relaxed orientation that helps you decide what to explore later on your own.
The best time is spring (April–June) or autumn (September–October). Summers are hot, crowded, and the guides have to shout over the noise. Expect to pay around €15–35 per person for a small-group tour; private tours or ones that include the walls usually sit at the higher end. Skip the huge cruise-ship groups that shuffle 30+ people together – they're cheap but you won't hear much and the pace is frustrating.
Pick a tour limited to 12 people or fewer that specifically includes the city walls if your legs are up for the climb; otherwise a standard Old Town walk is plenty for a first visit. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and book for the morning when it's cooler and you're still fresh.
