Boat trip to Lokrum from Dubrovnik: worth it?

A 15–25 minute boat ride from Dubrovnik’s old harbour drops you on Lokrum, a small island covered in pine and olive trees. Expect a peaceful contrast to the city: no cars, a few peacocks wandering around, rocky swimming spots, and a nudist beach on the far side. Most visitors spend 2–4 hours there – walking the trails, swimming in clear water, and having a picnic or grabbing something at the small café near the landing. The boat ride itself gives decent views of the city walls and coastal cliffs, but it’s short; the island is the main event. Crowds thin out after the morning rush and before the last boats back.

Best time is late spring (May–June) or early autumn (September–early October) when the weather is warm enough for swimming but the island isn’t packed. July and August get hot and busy; boats run frequently but you’ll share the best spots with day-trippers. Expect to pay around €25–45 per person for a return boat ticket, depending on whether you choose a basic shuttle or a longer guided cruise with snorkel stops. Add a few euros for the nominal island entrance fee that goes to the nature reserve.

Honest tip: take the regular shuttle if you just want a relaxed day swimming and exploring – the “panoramic cruise” versions add time on the water but don’t show you much more. Skip the guided tours that herd you around the island; you don’t need them. Bring water, reef-safe sunscreen, and swim shoes – the rocks are sharp.
