Lokrum Island from Dubrovnik: Worth It?

Lokrum is a small, car-free island 15 minutes by ferry from Dubrovnik’s old harbour. Expect a peaceful nature reserve covered in pine and cypress trees, wandering peacocks, rocky coves for swimming, and a couple of short trails. The famous “Dead Sea” is a warm, shallow saltwater lagoon that feels like a giant natural bathtub – great for floating. Most people spend 3–5 hours there: swim, walk the trails, have a picnic or grab something at the small café near the landing. It gets noticeably quieter after the midday boats leave.

Best time is late spring (May–early June) or September. July and August are hot, crowded, and the ferries run packed. Expect to pay around €25–45 per person total, covering the return boat ticket plus the island entry fee. Guided boat tours that add the Blue Cave or city walls sightseeing push the price toward the higher end and eat up most of a day.

Honest tip: go independently on an early boat and skip the organised tours unless you really want the Blue Cave. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes for the rocky entry, and your own snacks – the café is decent but limited and expensive. Skip the botanical garden if you’re short on time; the natural trails and swimming spots are the real reason to visit.
