Is Lokrum Island Worth Visiting?

Lokrum is a small, car-free island 15 minutes by boat from Dubrovnik's old harbor. Expect a peaceful nature reserve covered in pine and cypress trees, wandering peacocks, rocky coves for swimming, and a salty inland lagoon nicknamed the Dead Sea. It's a pleasant half-day escape from the city crowds. The island has marked paths, a few ruins, and decent snorkeling spots, but it's not a tropical paradise—think Mediterranean scrub, shaded trails, and stone beaches where you'll need water shoes. No hotels or cars, just nature and day visitors.

The best time to go is late spring (May–June) or early autumn (September–early October) when the weather is warm enough for swimming but the boats aren't packed. Summers get hot and crowded with limited shade. Expect to pay around €25–40 per person including the ferry and any small entry fee to the reserve; add a few euros for snacks or a cold drink on the island. Bring your own water and reef-safe sunscreen.

Honest tip: Skip the guided tours unless you really want the boat commentary—regular ferries run often and give you more freedom. Pick the far side of the island for quieter swimming spots and better snorkeling; the area near the main dock gets busy fast. Bring water shoes and a towel—you'll thank yourself on the rocks.
