Should You Walk Dubrovnik's City Walls?

The city walls are the single best thing you can do in Dubrovnik. You get to walk the full 2km perimeter high above the red rooftops with constant views over the sea, islands, and the tightly packed Old Town below. Expect steep steps, narrow passages, and a lot of photo stops. The full loop takes 1.5–2 hours at a comfortable pace. It’s exposed, so you’ll feel the sun and wind the entire time. The experience is genuinely impressive but physically tiring, especially in the heat of summer.

Best time is either early morning (first entry) or an hour before sunset. Avoid midday from May to September unless you enjoy baking. Shoulder seasons (April, late October) are ideal: fewer people, better light, and tolerable temperatures. Expect to pay around €35–55 per person depending on whether you go self-guided with just the entrance ticket or join a small-group guided walk. Combo tickets that bundle walls with other attractions usually land in the middle of that range.

Honest tip: skip the big group tours that start at 9–10am. Either buy the entrance ticket and walk it yourself at your own speed, or book the earliest morning or sunset slot. The difference in crowds and enjoyment is massive. Bring water, wear proper shoes, and don’t try to rush it.
