A boat trip from Nadi usually means either a fast jet boat ride up the Sigatoka River with some rapids and village stops, or a full-day catamaran cruise to the Mamanuca Islands. The river trip feels more like an adventure excursion – expect spray, loud engines, and a mix of scenery and staged cultural bits. The island cruises are classic tropical: sail out, snorkel on reefs, stop at a sandbar or floating platform for swimming and lunch. Both are heavily weather-dependent; if it’s pouring, visibility drops and the experience flattens. Boats typically leave from Port Denarau, about 20 minutes from most Nadi hotels.
Best time is the dry season from May to October when seas are calmer and rain is less likely. November to April can still work but expect afternoon squalls and rougher rides. Expect to pay around FJD 150–350 per person depending on whether it’s a half-day river trip or a full-day island cruise with lunch and snorkel gear. Longer Mamanuca trips with better reefs sit at the higher end.
Pick the smaller-group catamaran sail if you actually want good snorkeling and some quiet time on the water. Skip the floating bar party boats if you dislike crowds and loud music – they’re more floating nightclub than nature trip. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a waterproof bag for your phone, and zero expectations of total solitude; these are popular tourist runs, not private charters.
