Expect a pleasant but not life-changing ride. The shorter ferry option takes about 45 minutes each way and drops you straight into Monaco's harbor among the superyachts. Longer sightseeing boats (around 2–2.5 hours one way) go slower, hug the coast, and usually include a basic commentary. The views of the Riviera cliffs, villas, and headlands are genuinely good on a clear day, but the boats can be crowded in summer and the ride choppy if the wind picks up. Once in Monaco you'll have a few hours to walk around the port, climb to the palace, or visit the casino area before heading back.
The best time is late spring (May–June) or September–early October: fewer people, lower prices, and calmer seas than July and August. Expect to pay around €35–€65 for a standard round-trip ferry or guided boat tour. Private or semi-private options start closer to €150–€250 per person. Add a few euros for drinks on board and whatever you spend on land.
Pick the regular ferry if you mainly want to reach Monaco efficiently and explore on your own. Skip the cheapest group boat tours that spend most of the day at sea with loud commentary and only 90 minutes ashore – they're rarely worth it. Bring sunscreen, a light jacket, and cash for Monaco; the wind on the water is stronger than it looks from the quay.
