Bondi surf lessons are straightforward and well-run. You’ll meet your instructor on the sand, spend 15-20 minutes on the beach learning how to pop up and balance, then head into the water for the rest of the session. Most lessons are in small groups of 4–8 people. Expect lots of pushing from the instructor on your first waves and plenty of falling. The actual riding part feels short, but the thrill of catching your first proper wave is real. Water is usually around 18–22°C; you’ll be given a wetsuit.
Best time is spring (Sep–Nov) or autumn (Mar–May) when the crowds are lighter and the sun isn’t brutal. Summer (Dec–Feb) has warmer water but packed beaches and bigger beginner crowds. Expect to pay around $80–$130 for a 2-hour beginner lesson. Shorter 1-hour taster sessions exist but feel rushed.
Pick a small-group lesson over the cheapest mass groups if you actually want to improve. Skip trying to book private lessons on your first go – they’re expensive and the group format works fine for total beginners. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, and a change of clothes. Everything else (board, wetsuit) is provided.
