Should You See a Bullfight in Madrid?

Bullfighting remains a living tradition in Madrid, though it's increasingly controversial. What you'll see is a highly ritualized spectacle with six bulls and three matadors over about two and a half hours. The event has clear stages: the bull enters, picadors on horseback weaken it with lances, banderilleros plant barbed sticks, and the matador finishes with cape work and the sword. The crowd is loud and passionate—expect cheering, booing, and waving white handkerchiefs if they think the matador did well. It's graphic; the bull usually dies in the ring. Many travelers find it culturally fascinating but emotionally heavy. If you're sensitive to animal suffering, this isn't for you.

The best time is during the San Isidro festival in May and early June, when the top matadors perform almost daily at Las Ventas. The season runs from mid-March to mid-October, but quality drops outside the big weeks. Expect to pay around €40-€150 for tickets depending on seat quality—sunny side is cheaper but hot, shade is more comfortable. A decent mid-range seat usually lands between €60-€100.

Tip: buy tickets directly from the Las Ventas box office or official site when possible; avoid scalpers. Skip the tourist "bullfight experience" packages with transport and sangria; they're overpriced and tacky. Go on your own, sit in the shade, and read up on the rules beforehand so you understand what you're watching.
