Cajón del Maipo is a wide Andean valley about 1–1.5 hours east of Santiago. Most people do it as a half- or full-day excursion. Expect a scenic drive along the Maipo River with increasingly dramatic mountains, stops at viewpoints, maybe a short walk or hike, and—if you choose the right trip—a visit to an embankment or reservoir like Embalse El Yeso. The landscape is dry and rocky with turquoise water on clear days; it feels properly mountainous but it’s not Patagonia-level wilderness. Weather can shift quickly; it’s noticeably cooler and windier than the city.
Best time is spring (Oct–Dec) or autumn (Mar–May) when temperatures are comfortable and the road isn’t crowded with weekenders. Summer (Jan–Feb) is warmer but busier and dustier; winter offers snow but many tours reduce frequency and some higher sections may close. Expect to pay around $60–110 per person for a small-group van tour with pickup from Santiago, depending on group size, whether it includes lunch, and how far up the valley it goes. Private drivers or self-drive car rental push the total closer to $150–250 for two people.
Honest tip: choose a tour that reaches Embalse El Yeso if weather allows—it’s the payoff. Skip the ones that only do wineries and a quick viewpoint; you can do those closer to the city. Bring layers, sunscreen, water, and snacks—most tours stop for photos and short walks but aren’t proper hikes. If you rent a car, leave early to beat traffic and check road conditions; the last stretch to the reservoir is unpaved and can be slow.
