Cajón del Maipo Hike from Santiago

This is a solid half-to-full day trip if you want real mountains without leaving the Santiago area. Expect a scenic drive up the canyon followed by a straightforward 8 km round-trip trail (about 4-5 hours total hiking time) with steady but moderate elevation gain. The views are genuinely impressive – steep Andean walls, river valleys, and often snow-capped peaks in the distance. It's not wilderness solitude though; the main trails see regular foot traffic, especially on weekends. Altitude is noticeable (starts around 2,000m) so drink water and move slower than usual.

Best time is November to April when trails are clear and weather is more predictable. Summer (Dec-Feb) is warmest but can be hot and crowded. Avoid winter unless you specifically want snow hikes. Expect to pay around $80-160 per person for a guided day tour from Santiago that includes transport, guide, and usually lunch. Independent options with rental car or public transport plus taxi are cheaper but more hassle.

Pick the standard Cajón del Maipo valley hike if it's your first time – it's the right balance of views and effort. Skip adding multiple wineries or overpriced "premium" packages unless you really want them; the mountain scenery is the actual draw here. Bring layers, sunscreen, and good hiking shoes even if the tour says "easy."
