Should You Tour Castillo San Felipe in Cartagena?

Expect a solid history lesson wrapped in a massive, impressive fortress that overlooks the city. The tour usually lasts 3–4 hours and combines the castle with a couple of other stops like the Convent of La Popa or a quick old-town walk. Inside San Felipe you’ll climb tunnels, ramps, and battlements while a guide explains pirate attacks, Spanish engineering, and colonial defense. It’s straightforward sightseeing with decent views; it’s not thrilling or interactive, but it’s one of the better-preserved forts in the Americas. Wear good shoes—there’s a fair amount of uneven stone and stairs.

Best time to visit is December to March when it’s drier and slightly cooler. Avoid the peak midday heat (11 am–3 pm) year-round; early-morning tours are smartest. Expect to pay around $35–55 per person for a small-group tour with transport and a guide. Private tours or ones that add La Popa and a city drive sit at the higher end.

Tip: Choose the morning small-group option with an English-speaking guide and skip the full-day combo if you’re short on time or energy—the castle is the part worth seeing. Bring water and sunscreen; there’s almost no shade once you’re on the walls.
