A Rosario Islands day trip is basically a boat ride out of Cartagena’s busy harbor to a cluster of small islands with clear water, decent snorkeling, and a few beach clubs. Expect about 45-60 minutes each way, several short stops for swimming or snorkeling, a simple lunch (usually fish, rice, and plantains), and a visit to the aquarium where they do a dolphin and seal show. The water is prettier than in the city but it’s not the Maldives—visibility is good on calm days, average on choppy ones. Boats carry 10–30 people; some feel crowded, others relaxed. You’ll be back in the city by 4–5 pm.
Best time is December to mid-April when seas are calmer and rain is rare. June–November can be rougher with more afternoon showers, though the water is often warmer. Expect to pay around $50–$110 per person. The cheaper shared tours get you there and back with basic snorkel gear and lunch; the higher end adds smaller groups, better food, or an extra stop at a quieter beach.
Pick a tour with at least three swimming/snorkel stops and that visits Playa Blanca or similar early before the day-trippers pile in. Skip the ones that spend too long at the aquarium if you don’t care about animal shows—use that time in the water instead. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and cash for drinks.
