Rosario Islands Tour from Cartagena: Worth It?

A Rosario Islands tour is a full-day boat trip (usually 8am–4:30pm) that takes you out of Cartagena’s busy harbor to a cluster of small islands and coral reefs about an hour away. Expect a mix of open-ocean travel, a couple of swimming/snorkeling stops in clear but not always pristine water, and time at a beach or hotel pier where locals sell fresh seafood, drinks, and rent kayaks or jet skis. The water is warm and the scenery is pleasant—palm trees, turquoise patches, simple wooden piers—but it’s a popular day trip so don’t expect deserted tropical paradise. Boats carry 10–30 people; some tours add a quick stop at Bocachica fort or a drive-by of a former Escobar property on the way.

Best time is December to April when seas are calmer and rain is rare. June–November can be choppy with afternoon showers; seasickness pills are a good idea if you’re sensitive. Expect to pay around $50–$110 per person for a shared tour depending on inclusions like lunch, snorkel gear, and group size. Private options run higher.

Tip: Choose a smaller boat that visits fewer stops and gives you longer at the islands instead of the ones that cram in every attraction. Skip the “all-inclusive” party boats if you want actual snorkeling time; they’re louder and the reefs get crowded. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, cash for extras, and a dry bag—most boats get wet.
