Most horseback tours pick you up from your hotel in Cartagena and drive 20-40 minutes to La Boquilla or nearby beaches. Expect a 1- to 2-hour ride along the sand, often at sunset, with gentle waves on one side and mangroves or simple fishing villages on the other. The horses are usually calm Paso Fino types that walk and trot; beginners do fine, though you’ll still feel it in your legs the next day. Groups are small (4–8 people), guides are local and generally attentive, and you’ll get some photos and bottled water. It’s low-key rather than thrilling – more relaxing than adventurous.
Best time is December to March when it’s dry, breezy, and the sand isn’t scorching. Avoid April–November; rain can turn parts of the beach into mud and the humidity is brutal. Expect to pay around $70–$110 per person including transport; anything significantly cheaper often means tired horses or larger, less personal groups. Private rides cost more but are worth it if you want to go at your own pace.
Tip: Choose tours that start late afternoon for sunset; morning rides get hot fast. Skip the add-on “mangrove boat tour” packages – they’re usually rushed and not worth the extra money. Book directly with operators who let you meet the horses before committing; if the animals look skinny or skittish, walk away.
