Expect a full-day boat trip (roughly 8am–4:30pm) that takes you out of Cartagena’s bay toward the Rosario Islands. You’ll usually stop at Bocachica Fort first, then continue to a couple of islands for swimming, snorkeling in decent reefs, and a lunch of fish, rice, and plantains. The water is clear and warm, the vibe is relaxed Caribbean, but it’s a popular route so don’t expect total seclusion. The boat ride itself can be bumpy if the trade winds are up; bring motion-sickness remedies if you’re sensitive.
Best time is December to April when seas are calmer and rain is minimal. July–November brings more chance of afternoon showers and rougher water. Expect to pay around $60–$90 for a standard group tour with lunch and basic snorkel gear. VIP or smaller “party” boats run $120–$160, while a private charter for 4–8 people can easily top $800–$2,000 for the day depending on the boat.
Honest tip: choose the 5-stop version that includes decent snorkeling time and lunch on a quieter island rather than the versions that spend hours at the overcrowded party beach in Cholon. Skip the add-on “aquarium visit” unless you really want to see captive dolphins and sea lions; the natural reefs are the better experience.
