Should You Tour Lima Cathedral?

Expect a solid but not mind-blowing visit. The cathedral is large, ornate, and historically important, with colonial architecture, religious art, and access to the catacombs where you’ll see thousands of neatly arranged bones. A typical guided tour of the cathedral and adjacent areas lasts about 60-90 minutes. The building can feel crowded with tour groups, and the interior is impressive but somewhat dimly lit. Many people combine it with a walk through the Plaza Mayor and a panoramic drive through Miraflores, turning it into a half-day experience. It’s genuinely informative if you take a guided tour because there are almost no information panels inside.

The best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons (April-May or September-October) when Lima is less humid and the historic center isn’t quite as packed. Expect to pay around $35-60 for a half-day tour that includes transport from Miraflores and a cathedral visit; full-day city tours that bundle the cathedral with more sites usually run $100-120 per person. Independent entry is possible and cheap, but you’ll miss most of the context without a guide.

Tip: Take the guided cathedral tour but skip the catacombs if you’re squeamish about bones or have already seen similar sites in Europe. Go early in the morning if you can; the light is better and groups are smaller. Wear modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
