Swimming with Sea Lions from Lima

Expect a full-day trip: two-hour speedboat ride each way from Lima's Callao harbor to the Palomino Islands, where hundreds of sea lions haul out on the rocks and swim in the cold Humboldt Current. The actual swim lasts 30-45 minutes in 14-18°C water. You'll be in a 5mm wetsuit with mask and snorkel; the sea lions are wild, curious, and sometimes very close. They might brush past or play, but they're not trained circus animals. The boat also stops at other islands for bird colonies (penguins, boobies). It's choppy, noisy, and smells like guano. Not a relaxing beach day, but genuinely wild and memorable if you like animals.

Best time is December to March when the water is slightly warmer and seas are calmer. Avoid June-August unless you don't mind rougher ocean and colder water. Expect to pay around $80-130 per person including wetsuit, snacks, and transport from central Lima. Private or small-group options sit at the higher end.

Pick the morning departure that includes actual swim time with sea lions rather than just viewing from the boat. Skip the add-on sandboarding at Huacachina if you're only in Lima for a few days; it's a long extra drive and the sea lion swim is the real point of the day. Bring your own towel, waterproof camera, and motion sickness meds if you're sensitive.
