A typical cave kayak tour takes you from near the Old Town walls out to Betina Cave and often includes a stop at Lokrum Island. Expect two to three hours of paddling in stable tandem or single sea kayaks, with a guide leading the group. You’ll paddle along the cliffs, enter a sea cave where you can swim, and get a completely different view of the city walls and islands. The water is usually clear and calm inside the cave, but the open sea can have some chop, especially in the afternoon. Most tours include basic snorkel gear and a short swim break. It’s active but not extreme — fit beginners do fine, though it helps if you’ve kayaked before.
Summer (June–September) is the busiest and hottest; the sea is warmest then but tours sell out and the sun is brutal. May and October give you milder temperatures, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Expect to pay around €35–55 per person for a standard half-day group tour; private or sunset options run higher. Book morning departures if you want cooler air and better light.
Pick a small-group tour (under 10 kayaks) with a stop inside the actual cave rather than one that just floats past the entrance. Skip the giant 30-person flotillas — they feel more like herding than an experience. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a waterproof phone case, and a towel; wear quick-dry clothes or a swimsuit under your clothes. If you get seasick easily, take something beforehand because the paddle back can be bouncy.
