Most people do the straightforward hike up Cerro San Cristóbal inside Parque Metropolitano. It’s a steady climb of about 2–3 hours round-trip with decent trails, stair sections, and views over the city and Andes. You’ll share the route with locals walking their dogs and tourists. For a real mountain experience, guided trips head to Cerro Provincia or Cerro El Plomo. Provincia is a stiff full-day climb with rewarding summit views and occasional condors; El Plomo is a serious 3-day high-altitude trek reaching over 5,400 m. Expect dusty trails, strong sun, and big temperature swings once you’re above the smog layer.
The best time is November to April when days are longer and drier. Avoid winter (June–August) unless you want snow and colder conditions. Expect to pay around $40–80 for a half-day guided San Cristóbal or Providencia-area hike including transport. A full-day Provincia trip usually runs $90–150 per person. The 3-day El Plomo expedition lands in the $400–650 range with gear, meals, and mules where needed.
Pick a small-group guided trip to Cerro Provincia if you’re fit and want a proper mountain day without multi-day commitment. Skip the large bus tours that only go halfway up San Cristóbal and spend more time at souvenir stalls. Bring your own water, sunblock, and layers; most guides provide only the basics.
