Chamarel Waterfall, Mauritius: Worth It?

Chamarel Waterfall is a solid 100-metre drop in the southwest of Mauritius, set inside a forested gorge. You walk down a well-maintained but steep path (about 15–20 minutes each way) to a viewpoint platform where the falls look impressive after rain. The water crashes hard and the spray can reach you. Expect crowds at the main lookout; the experience itself is short – most people spend 45–90 minutes total. Combine it with the nearby Colored Earths if you’re driving, otherwise it feels like a lot of effort for one waterfall. The surrounding park is pleasant but nothing extraordinary compared to other tropical islands.

Best time is December to April when there’s more water in the falls; it looks thin and disappointing from June to October. Entry plus parking will set you back around $8–15 per person if you go independently. Organized half-day tours from the north or west coast usually run $45–80 per person including transport. Helicopter tours that include the underwater waterfall illusion are significantly more expensive – expect to pay $250–400+ per person.

Tip: Skip the guided group tours unless you hate driving; renting a car or taking a taxi gives you far better timing and avoids the cattle-herd feeling at the viewpoint. Do the short forest walk to the lower platform if it’s open – the view is noticeably better than the crowded upper one. Bring mosquito repellent and decent shoes; the steps get slippery fast.
