Johannesburg City Sightseeing Bus: Worth It?

The Joburg hop-on hop-off bus is a straightforward double-decker with an open top that loops around the city’s main sights. You get decent views of Constitution Hill, the Mandela sites, Maboneng, and the financial district while an audio guide gives basic history. Expect slow traffic in the CBD, occasional safety announcements, and a mix of tourists and locals. The full loop takes roughly two hours if you stay on, but most people hop off at two or three stops. It’s convenient if your time is short or you don’t want to organise taxis, but it won’t show you the real depth of the city.

Go between April and August when the weather is cooler and clearer; summer thunderstorms and heat can make the open top unpleasant. Expect to pay around R400–R650 for a one-day ticket; two-day tickets or packages that include Soweto push the price closer to R900–R1200 per person. The Soweto add-on is worth it if you want to see the townships comfortably; the standard city loop on its own feels a bit surface-level.

Tip: buy the ticket that includes the Soweto extension and do the city loop first to get your bearings, then head south the next morning. Skip the evening “party bus” option – it’s more about loud music than sightseeing and the safety vibe changes after dark. Sit on the right side going outbound for better light on the key monuments.
