A New Orleans cocktail tour is basically a guided walk through the French Quarter with stops at a handful of bars. You’ll taste three or four classic drinks (Sazerac, Hurricane, Ramos Gin Fizz, Vieux Carré) while a guide drops history and bar lore. Expect a small group of 8–15 people, roughly two hours on foot, and a decent amount of alcohol. It’s fun if you like drinking with structure and don’t want to waste time finding good bars yourself. It’s less fun if you prefer solo bar-hopping or can’t handle three cocktails before dinner.
Best time is February–May or October–early December. Summers are brutally hot and humid; peak Mardi Gras and Christmas weeks are crowded and chaotic. Expect to pay around $85–$130 per person including the drinks. Some tours add small plates; others don’t. Tipping the guide is customary.
Pick a tour that caps the group size and visits actual classic spots instead of tourist traps. Skip anything promising “secret speakeasies” or more than four drinks — it’s marketing nonsense and you’ll be sloppy by the end. If you’re staying in the Quarter, just walk the route yourself the next afternoon with the same bar list; you’ll save money and go at your own pace.
