Cruise or Drive to Key West from Miami

A day trip from Miami to Key West gives you about five to six hours on the island after a 3–4 hour journey each way. By catamaran you get open water, possible dolphin sightings, and a breezy arrival into the harbor; by car you control the schedule and can stop along the Overseas Highway for photos or snacks. Expect a lively but tourist-packed town: Duval Street bars, conch fritters, and sunset at Mallory Square. It’s a long day—most people roll back into Miami after 8pm—so don’t plan anything energetic that evening.

Best time is January through April when the weather is driest and seas are usually calmest. Summer and early fall bring cheaper fares but risk of rain, heat, and possible tropical storms that cancel sailings. Expect to pay around $150–$280 per person for a basic cruise package that includes transport and a few snacks; driving yourself plus parking and fuel runs $80–$150 for two people but leaves you on your own for food and activities.

Pick the car if you want flexibility and hate crowds on the boat; pick the catamaran if you’d rather sip a drink and watch the water. Skip the organized “trolley tour” on the island—it’s mostly slow traffic and canned commentary. Bring water, sunscreen, and cash for tips; everything on Key West is overpriced once you step off the dock.
