Dubai Desert Camel Ride: What to Know

A typical Dubai camel ride is a short 20-40 minute experience where you sit on a kneeling camel that lurches up and walks in a loose line through the desert. Most tours combine it with dune bashing in a 4x4, sandboarding, and a sunset or evening BBQ with shisha and belly dancing. The actual riding part is gentler than it looks but can feel bouncy; expect a basic saddle and a handler leading your camel. It's touristy, not a solo trek across the dunes. The desert itself is surprisingly beautiful at golden hour, but don't expect silence or solitude; you'll usually be in a group of 10-30 people.

Best time is December to March when it's cooler and the evenings are pleasant. Summer rides (May-October) are brutally hot even at sunset. Expect to pay around $40-90 per person for a basic shared sunset tour that includes the camel ride, dune bashing, and dinner. Private or luxury options with fewer people and better food run $120-250. The cheapest $25 tours are often rushed and feel like a conveyor belt.

Pick a smaller-group sunset tour if you want decent photos and less chaos. Skip the full-day versions unless you really love dune bashing; the extra hours mostly mean more time sitting around the camp. Bring a light jacket for after sunset and a scarf to block sand.
