Desert Hiking in Los Cabos: What You Need to Know

A desert hike in Los Cabos takes you away from the crowded beaches into arid landscapes of cacti, rocky canyons, and surprising pockets of green. Expect a mix of sun-baked trails, dry riverbeds, and occasional oases with small waterfalls or pools after rain. Most half-day guided hikes last 3–5 hours, involve moderate elevation changes, and finish with views over the Sea of Cortez or the Pacific. It’s hot, dusty, and exposed—bring plenty of water, good shoes, and sun protection. The terrain can be uneven with loose rocks, so it’s not ideal if you have bad knees or zero hiking experience.

The best time is December through April when temperatures are milder (70–85°F). Summers are brutally hot and the rainy season (July–October) can bring flash floods, so avoid those months. Expect to pay around $80–$150 per person for a half-day guided hike including transport and a basic lunch or snacks. Park fees are usually extra, around $20–$30. Private tours or sunrise options push toward the higher end.

Pick a small-group sunrise hike if you want cooler temps and fewer people; the light on the desert is genuinely beautiful then. Skip the combo tours that tack on a city stop or boat ride—they dilute the experience and make the day too long. Bring your own snacks and a hat; most guides know the trails but won’t baby you.
