Whale Shark Snorkeling in Los Cabos: What to Know

Expect a very early start and a two-hour drive from Los Cabos to La Paz, where small boats take you into the bay to find whale sharks. The sharks are filter feeders and usually cruise near the surface, so you jump in, snorkel for 10–15 minutes at a time, and get surprisingly close—often within a few feet of these gentle giants that can reach 40 feet. The water is usually clear but can be chilly; you’ll see lots of remoras and sometimes dolphins or sea lions. Trips last 8–10 hours total, with lunch included on the boat. It’s a wildlife encounter, not a relaxing beach day, so prepare for sun, wind, and possible seasickness on the return.

Best time is mid-October through early February when the sharks gather in large numbers; December and January usually offer the most consistent sightings. Expect to pay around $150–$220 per person from Los Cabos, including transport, gear, and a marine biologist guide. Book a small-group tour (8–12 people max) rather than the big 30-person boats if you can—they give you more time in the water and less waiting. Skip trying to do this as a cheap last-minute add-on in town; the better operators sell out and the discount ones often deliver rushed encounters or no refunds when sharks don’t show.
