A desert safari is basically a half-day or evening escape from Dubai's skyscrapers into the red dunes. Expect a 4x4 pickup from your hotel, 30-45 minutes of dune bashing (bumpy, thrilling, and sometimes nauseating), then arrival at a desert camp. There you'll find camel rides, sandboarding, henna tattoos, shisha, and a decent BBQ buffet with Arabic entertainment — belly dancing and a fire show after sunset. It's touristy and not exactly authentic Bedouin life, but it's genuinely fun if you want contrast to the city. The evening version is far more popular because you get the sunset and cooler temperatures.
Best time is November to March when it's not brutally hot. Summer safaris exist but you'll be sweating even after sunset. Expect to pay around $50-90 per person for a standard evening tour with dinner and shows; premium private or luxury camps with better food and smaller groups run $120-200. Morning tours are cheaper and quieter but lack the atmosphere.
Pick the smaller-group red-dune safari over the massive bus tours if you can. Skip the quad bike add-on unless you're really into it — it's overpriced and eats into your time at the camp. Bring a light jacket for after dark; the desert gets cold fast.
