Desert Sunset Safari in Abu Dhabi: Worth It?

A typical Abu Dhabi desert sunset safari is a half-day tour that picks you up from your hotel in the city, drives you out into the Empty Quarter dunes, and gives you a mix of adrenaline and calm. Expect 20-40 minutes of dune bashing in a 4x4 (it’s bumpy and genuinely fun for most people), a stop for sandboarding, a short camel ride, and then settling in at a Bedouin-style camp to watch the sunset. After dark you get Arabic coffee, shisha, henna painting, a decent BBQ buffet dinner, and a belly dancing or Tanoura show. The whole thing usually lasts 5–6 hours. It’s touristy but still delivers the classic desert experience without needing to go far.

Best time is November to March when it’s cooler and the sand isn’t scorching. Summer safaris are cheaper but you’ll be sweating even after sunset. Expect to pay around $80–$160 per person depending on group size, inclusions, and whether you choose a basic shared tour or a smaller private one. Private tours with better vehicles and fewer people are noticeably more comfortable.

Pick a tour that includes both dune bashing and a proper sunset viewpoint; skip the full-day Liwa versions unless you have an extra day and really want the remotest dunes — they’re long and tiring for most visitors. Bring a light jacket for the evening; desert nights get chilly even in winter.
