Dhobi Ghat is exactly what it sounds like: hundreds of men hand-washing clothes in concrete vats, beating them on stones, and hanging endless rows of laundry to dry. It's a working laundry, not a theme park. Expect noise, strong detergent smells, and the chaotic energy of real labor. Most visitors go on guided tours that combine it with Dharavi slum. The experience lasts 30-60 minutes at the laundry itself. You'll stand on a viewing platform or walk along the edges while your guide explains the system. It's genuinely interesting for 20 minutes, then it starts to feel repetitive unless you're into photography or textiles.
Best time is November to February when it's cooler and drier. Avoid monsoon season (June-September) because the place becomes a muddy mess and tours get canceled. Expect to pay around $10-35 per person depending on whether it's a small group tour, private car, or half-day combo with other sights. Private tours with just your guide and driver sit at the higher end.
Tip: Choose the morning tour that starts at the wholesale markets and ends at Dhobi Ghat. The energy is better and you see the full cycle. Skip the sunset versions. Also, don't bother with the ultra-cheap tours that pack 12 people into a van. The experience is much better with 4-6 max so you can actually hear the guide and move around comfortably.
