Ek Balam is a compact but impressive Mayan site about 2.5 hours west of Cancun. Expect a peaceful ruin with one towering acropolis you can still climb for sweeping jungle views, well-preserved carvings including unusual winged figures, and far fewer crowds than Chichen Itza. The tour usually includes a stop at a cenote for swimming, lunch at a local restaurant, and a basic guide who explains the history in English or Spanish. The whole day runs 10-11 hours door-to-door. It's a solid choice if you want ruins without the massive tour-bus chaos.
Best time is November through April when it's drier and cooler. Summer and early fall are hotter, more humid, and rainy, though prices drop. Expect to pay around $80–$130 per person from Cancun depending on group size, inclusions, and whether you go in a small van or big bus. Private tours push toward the higher end.
Tip: choose the smaller-group option if you can; it lets you actually enjoy the site instead of rushing with 40 other people. Skip the overpriced “VIP” add-ons like the photo pass or extra hammock time at the cenote; they're not worth it. Bring reef-safe bug spray, water, and cash for the bathrooms and small tips.
