Should You Walk the English Garden in Munich?

The English Garden is a massive, beautifully landscaped park that feels more like open countryside than a city green space. Expect wide gravel paths, meadows, the occasional surf wave on the Eisbach, beer gardens, and a mix of locals walking dogs, jogging, or sunbathing nude in designated areas. A typical walking tour combines it with Old Town or focuses just on the garden and lasts 2–4 hours. It’s relaxed rather than packed with must-see monuments; the pleasure comes from the scenery and atmosphere rather than ticking off sights.

Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–September) when everything is green and the beer gardens are open. Mornings are quieter; afternoons can get busy, especially weekends. Expect to pay around €15–€90 per person depending on whether you join a small group tour, go private, or simply wander by yourself with a good map. Food and drink in the garden add another €10–20 if you stop for a beer and pretzel.

Pick the southern half first if your time is limited; that’s where the surfers, Chinese Tower beer garden, and prettiest landscapes sit. Skip any tour that promises to cover both the entire garden and all of Old Town in under three hours; you’ll just end up rushing. Bring comfortable shoes and cash for the beer gardens.
